glossary

ante · a forced bet in some versions of poker all players make before receiving cards.
blind · a forced bet in some versions of poker made prior to receiving cards, often determined by position relative to the dealer. With larger tables, there will be a big and little blind, with the big blind double the size of the little and representing the minimum bet for that hand.
flop, turn, river · referring to the Texas Hold'em version of poker, these represent the first group of three, followed by the fourth, and finally the fifth community card.
flush draw · an imcomplete hand with three or four cards of the same suit, where the player draws to get the final cards of the same suit.
inside or outside straight · an incomplete hand with cards either missing inside the run or outside to complete the straight, with the outside straight twice as favorable. For example, a hand consisting of a 5, 6, 8 and 9 leaves the player with an inside straight, a good hand only if the player can get a 7; a hand consisting of 10, jack, queen and king leaves the player with an outside straight with two possibilities: either a 9 or an ace will complete it.
nuts · a nut hand, or playing to the nuts, refers to the best possible hand of the type you are playing. For example, a jack-high flush is not as strong as an ace-high flush, as only the top card of that hand determines its strength. Nut hands also mean that the player will likely be aggressively betting.
stud · a term indicating that no cards additional cards are dealt or traded with players. What you see is what you get.
wild · a term indicating that the specified card or cards has a variable value, and can usually substitute for any other card value to add to your hand's strength.
